Describe your current mood or goal, and AI matches you to a real Japanese calligraphy phrase and brush-stroke style - plus stroke-order guidance and the meaning behind it.
Description
Shodo - the Japanese art of brush calligraphy - is often reduced abroad to a single decorative kanji tattoo or a wall print with no real meaning attached. Outside Japan, almost no one knows that shodo phrases are chosen deliberately for a moment in life, or that the same phrase can be written in different brush-stroke styles depending on the feeling you want it to carry. Shodo Brush turns that gap into a small, personal discovery. Describe what you're feeling or working toward right now - starting over, staying patient through something hard, feeling grateful, needing calm before a big moment - and our AI, playing the role of a shodo teacher, matches you to the single best-fitting phrase from a curated roster of eight real ones: Ichigo Ichie (one encounter, one chance), Shoshin (beginner's mind), Wa (harmony), Nintai (perseverance), Mushin (mind without attachment), Heijoshin (everyday calm), Shojin (devoted effort), and Kansha (gratitude). Each match comes with a plain-language explanation of why the phrase fits your moment, the traditional brush-stroke style it's typically written in (Kaisho block style, Gyosho semi-cursive, or Sosho flowing cursive), basic stroke-order guidance for the characters, and a genuine note on the phrase's origin - a Zen teaching, a tea-ceremony saying, or a piece of calligraphy history. The Phrases tab lets you browse all eight as a standalone reference any time, even without describing a mood. Your past matches are saved to a personal history so you can revisit one before a moment that calls for it again. A limited number of free matches are available each day, with the option to unlock more by watching a short ad.

About Ads

This app displays ads via Google AdMob, including a banner at the bottom of the screen. The mood or goal text you enter is sent to Anthropic's Claude API solely to generate your match and is not permanently stored on our servers.

Roadmap

Why This App

Shodo is a practice of choosing the right words for the right moment, then giving them physical form through the brush - a distinctly Japanese answer to a universal need: something to hold onto when starting over, waiting something out, or feeling thankful. Outside Japan, that idea rarely goes further than a decorative print. Shodo Brush starts from the question anyone can answer - what are you feeling right now - and turns it into a real phrase with real meaning and real technique behind it, so the practice becomes something to actually use, not just look at.
