Tell us about your trip - whether you have tattoos, who you're traveling with, and whether you prefer public or private bathing - and our AI matches you to a real type of Japanese hot spring: rotenburo, uchiyu, ashiyu, or a private kashikiri-buro, and walks you through genuine bathing etiquette so you don't commit a first-timer's mistake.
Description
Onsen - natural hot springs - are woven into Japanese daily life in a way most first-time visitors don't expect: a set of unwritten but strictly followed rules governs how you enter the water, and getting them wrong stands out immediately to everyone else bathing. Onsen Manner turns "I want to try an onsen" into a real, matched plan. Describe whether you have visible tattoos, who you're traveling with (solo, partner, family with young children), and whether you'd rather bathe alongside strangers or privately, and our AI matches you to a real bathing format: rotenburo, an open-air bath usually built into a rock or wood setting and prized for its seasonal view; uchiyu, the indoor communal bath found in nearly every ryokan and public bathhouse; ashiyu, a free public foot bath open to anyone, clothed, requiring no reservation or tattoo policy at all; or kashikiri-buro, a private family bath you can reserve by the half-hour, the standard workaround at establishments that restrict tattoos in the shared baths. Every match comes with the actual etiquette sequence, not a summary: washing your entire body at the shower stations before stepping into the shared water, never letting your small tenugui towel touch the bath water (most visitors fold it and set it on their head), entering and leaving quietly, and never swimming or splashing. The app also explains why some establishments still restrict visible tattoos (a policy tied to historical associations with organized crime that is unevenly enforced and slowly changing) and which bathing formats sidestep the issue entirely. The Etiquette tab lets you browse every rule as a standalone reference at any time, even without running a match, so you can double-check before you go.

About Ads

This app displays ads via Google AdMob, including a banner at the bottom of the screen. Free AI matches are limited to 5 per day; once that limit is reached, watching a rewarded video ad unlocks 3 additional matches. The trip description you enter is sent to Anthropic's Claude API solely to generate your match and is not permanently stored on our servers.

Why This App

Onsen etiquette is rarely written down anywhere a first-time visitor will actually see it before they're already undressed at the entrance, and the rules that do circulate online are often vague or outdated on points like tattoo policy. Onsen Manner starts from something any traveler can describe in a sentence - who they're with and what they're worried about - and turns it into a real matched bathing format and the exact etiquette sequence to follow, so a visit that could feel intimidating becomes a considered, comfortable part of the trip.
