Netsuke almost always travel as an isolated photograph: a walnut-sized carved figure, admired for its detail, with no explanation of what it was for or why its subject was chosen. Before Western-style pockets existed, a kimono had nowhere to carry a pouch, pipe case, or inro (a small stacked medicine case). Those containers were hung from a cord tucked through the obi sash, and a netsuke was carved onto the other end of that cord as a toggle - small enough to sit at the waist, sturdy enough to catch on the sash, and always pierced with a pair of holes called himotoshi through which the cord actually passed. Netsuke Charm closes the gap between the photograph and the reasoning. Every match includes a plain-language explanation of the himotoshi: the two small holes, usually one larger and one smaller, drilled through the netsuke so a silk cord could be threaded and knotted. Without a correctly placed himotoshi the piece could not function at all, which is why carvers treated its placement as part of the design rather than an afterthought. The match also notes the traditional carving material most associated with that subject, such as boxwood, ivory, or stag antler. The Subjects tab lets you browse animal, folklore, and everyday-object netsuke as a standalone reference at any time. Matches and their explanations are saved to a personal Collection Journal with photos and notes, turning a shelf of miniature carvings into a record of the story behind each one.
