Describe a personality - your own or someone you're buying a gift for - and AI matches them to one of eight real traditional kokeshi doll lineages, with the region's history and painting motifs explained.
Description
Kokeshi dolls are one of Japan's most recognizable folk crafts abroad, but almost always sold and displayed with no context: a smooth wooden figure with a painted face and floral robe, and nothing said about why it looks the way it does. What most buyers never learn is that "dento kokeshi" (traditional kokeshi) is not one style - it is a family of at least eleven distinct regional lineages from the Tohoku mountains, each with its own head shape, body proportions, painting pattern, and even its own distinctive creaking sound when the head is turned. Kokeshi Craft turns that hidden structure into a simple, personal match. Describe a personality - patient, cheerful, quietly strong, someone who loves nature - your own or that of a person you're choosing a gift for, and our AI, playing the role of a kokeshi artisan, matches it to the single best-fitting style from a curated roster of eight real traditional lineages: Naruko (famous for its creaking neck joint), Tsuchiyu (small heads with concentric-ring eyes), Togatta (slender build, chrysanthemum patterns), Yajiro (bold, thick-bodied figures), Sakunami (rounder faces, simple floral bands), Zao Takayu (bright, varied color patterns), Nanbu (undecorated wood grain left visible), and Tsugaru (dynamic, hand-carved daruma-eye faces). Each match comes with a plain-language explanation of why the style fits the described personality, the mountain-hot-spring town the lineage originates from, its defining painting motifs and proportions, and a short note on the woodturning craft (kijishi) tradition behind it. The Lineages tab lets you browse all eight as a standalone reference any time. A limited number of free matches are available each day, with the option to unlock more by watching a short ad.

Roadmap

Why This App

Outside Japan, kokeshi dolls are usually bought as a generic souvenir with no sense that a real regional craft tradition sits behind the design. Kokeshi Craft starts from a question anyone can answer - what is this person like - and turns it into a real lineage, from a real mountain town, with real history behind it, so a kokeshi doll becomes something chosen on purpose rather than picked at random off a shelf.
