Description

Karesansui, the "dry landscape" rock gardens found at Zen temples across Japan, are often photographed but rarely understood. Visitors see raked white gravel and a scatter of stones and assume the arrangement is decorative, when in fact every element follows centuries-old design rules: rocks are grouped in odd numbers to avoid visual symmetry, gravel is raked into specific patterns to suggest water around those "islands," and the whole composition is built around a principle called fukinsei - intentional asymmetry as a reflection of nature's own imperfection. Karesansui Zen turns those rules into something personal.
