Description

Bonsai is usually shown as a finished photograph - a small, ancient-looking tree in a shallow pot - with little explanation of why it was trained into that particular shape. Five styles account for most bonsai seen today: Chokkan, the formal upright, a single straight trunk tapering evenly toward the apex; Moyogi, the informal upright, a trunk that curves gently left and right while the apex still sits over the root base; Shakan, the slanting style, trained at an angle as if shaped by wind; Kengai, the cascade, trained to fall below the rim of its pot as if growing off a cliff; and Ishitsuki, the root-over-rock style, where roots are trained to grip a stone before reaching soil. Bonsai Spirit closes the gap between the photo and the reasoning. Describe a personality trait, a mood, or a living space you want to fill - a calm reading corner, a windswept coastal balcony, a bold entryway - and our AI, working from documented bonsai tradition, matches you to the style and a real tree species suited to it. Each match explains why the style fits and names species commonly trained that way, such as Japanese black pine (kuromatsu), Japanese maple (momiji), Chinese elm (nire), Shimpaku juniper, or Satsuki azalea. Every match also includes a plain-language breakdown of the two techniques that actually build the shape: wiring, where copper or aluminum wire is wound around a branch to bend it into position over months, and pruning, where growth is cut back to a chosen point to keep the silhouette in proportion as the tree ages. Wiring guidance covers wire gauge and how long to leave it on before it bites into growing bark; pruning guidance covers when in the growing season to cut and how much to remove at once. The Styles tab lets you browse all five training styles as a standalone reference any time. Matches and their explanations are saved to a personal Training Journal with photos and notes, so a windowsill of trees in progress becomes a record of the intent behind each one.
